From intelligence to agency: AI's new frontier in international security.

Image
The  UNIDIR and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) are pleased to invite you to a side event to the First Committee of the UN General Assembly titled "From intelligence to agency: AI's new frontier in international security". Agentic AI refers to artificial intelligence systems designed not merely to process or analyze information, but to pursue objectives and take action autonomously in order to achieve those objectives . These systems operate with a degree of independence, adaptability and initiative that distinguishes them from more conventional forms of AI. The term "agentic" highlights their function as agents: entities that exist within an environment, assess it, make decisions based on internal goals, and execute actions without requiring direct human instruction at every step . For policymakers, the crucial point is not the underlying technical architecture, but the fact that these systems can act independently and interact with each other. The emer...

Secretary-General's Common Pledge on Women's Participation in Peace Processes.

Image
The objective of this high-level meeting is to hear from women who have shaped peace processes as negotiators, civil society activists and mediators, and to showcase how Adopters of the Common Pledge are moving from commitment to concrete implementation across the Pledge's four commitment areas. The year 2025 marks the 25th anniversary of UN Security Council resolution 1325 (2000) and the women, peace and security (WPS) agenda as well as the 30th anniversary of the (1995) Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. Despite significant progress in advancing parts of these commitments, one of the most persistent challenges remains the continuously low levels of participation by women in peace and mediation processes. According to a frequently cited study, between the years 1992 and 2019, women constituted only 13 per cent of negotiators and six per cent of mediators in major peace processes. The Secretary-General's Common Pledge to Increase Women's Full, Equal, and Meaningf...

Low Orbit Satellite Internet Systems in the Context of International Peace and Security: Challenges and Threats.

Image
Side event on the margins of the UNGA First Committee "Low orbit satellite internet systems in the context of international peace and security: challenges and threats" hosted by Russian Permanent Mission to the UN, Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the UN and Permanent Mission of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to the UN. Rapid technological advancement and unconstrained expansion of Low Earth orbit satellite Internet communications systems (LEO satellites) have led to the emergence of new challenges in the field of international peace and security. It is worth noting that LEO satellites have been used outside of their declared "availability maps", providing Internet access in circumvention of national laws and regulatory authorities. This has paved the way for malign activities against individual UN Member States aimed at interfering in their internal affairs and fueling socio-political destabilization from abroad. At the same time, recen...
