What does the theme of “Cultivating a Culture of Peace” mean.



The 2024 theme “Cultivating a Culture of Peace” draws inspiration from UNESCO’s foundational belief that “wars begin in the minds of men, so it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed. ”

Peace, through this perspective, is not an abstract concept; it is a cultural process that must be taught, practiced, and embedded into every level of society. Cultivating peace involves instilling values of dialogue and mutual respect from an early age, ensuring these ideals permeate across generations and geographic boundaries. It is through this cultural transmission of peace that we can hope to build a world where conflicts are resolved not through violence but through dialogue and mutual respect.

The objective of this high-level meeting is to hear from women who have shaped peace processes as negotiators, civil society activists and mediators, and to showcase how Adopters of the Common Pledge are moving from commitment to concrete implementation across the Pledge's four commitment areas. The year 2025 marks the 25th anniversary of UN Security Council resolution 1325 (2000) and the women, peace and security (WPS) agenda as well as the 30th anniversary of the (1995) Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. Despite significant progress in advancing parts of these commitments, one of the most persistent challenges remains the continuously low levels of participation by women in peace and mediation processes. According to a frequently cited study, between the years 1992 and 2019, women constituted only 13 per cent of negotiators and six per cent of mediators in major peace processes.
