Joint meeting of the Economic and Social Council and the Peacebuilding Commission 2026.


The President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), H.E. Mr. Lok Bahadur Thapa, and the Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC), H.E. Mr. Omar Hilale, will convene a joint meeting of ECOSOC and the PBC on 22 June 2026 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Trusteeship Council Chamber, United Nations Headquarters in New York.



The joint meeting will focus on "From Risk to Resilience: Advancing Social Cohesion through Job Creation in Peacebuilding Contexts". The meeting aims to bring together Member States, United Nations entities, international financial institutions, private sector actors, and civil society representatives to exchange experiences, identify good practices, and promote integrated approaches that link employment generation with peacebuilding outcomes. It will provide an opportunity to highlight how job creation can strengthen social cohesion and resilience in peacebuilding contexts, drawing on evidence from ECOSOC, the PBC, and the Peacebuilding Fund (PBF)-supported initiatives.

The outcome of the meeting will be a joint summary by the President of ECOSOC and the Chair of the PBC, highlighting the main conclusions and recommendations.

Why Conflicts Escalate?

 • The world is facing a violent conflict crisis . There were 59 state-based conflicts in 2023, the highest number since the end of World War II.  • Deaths from state-based violent conflict reached a 32-year high in 2022. Although the number of deaths is below levels seen during the Cold War, the sheer number of active conflicts increases the risk of at least one conflict rapidly escalating.  • Fewer violent conflicts now end with a peace deal or clear victory . Since the 1970s, the percentage of conflicts that end with a clear victory has dropped from 49 per cent to nine per cent, while the proportion of conflicts ending in peace agreements has fallen from 23 per cent to four per cent.  • The number of internationalised intrastate conflicts have increased 175 per cent since 2010.
